About Prof. BallaFrom a young age Dr. Balla has had a fascination with balls. He first discovered them in the bathtub as a boy and it began a lifelong love affair. Always consumed with a passion for sports and science, he earned top marks at Chestnut Elementary in Toledo, OH. His grit and determination earned him the starting quarterback position on the football team at Sach Senior HS, home of the Ragers. Committed to his team, Balla was known for being a hard and strong player, his tough love rubbing off on everyone from the field to the locker rooms. Despite this he still had care and sensitivity, sticking up for the other young men in the showers. Leading the Ragers to two consecutive varsity state championships, he earned a legendary reputation and cemented his legacy. He graduated sigma cum load and earned a full ride at Pensacola State College. Playing on the college's football team while taking on a full load of classes, Balla spent his days grinding with his study partner in the library and his evenings taking abuse from the brawny men on the field. Exhausted from pursuing his doctorate in sports medicine, Balla began to experience some performance anxiety on the field. During a practice game, he suffered a broken wrist and concussion. The former failed to heal properly despite extensive physical therapy and surgeries and Balla suffered from a Percocet dependency which continues to this day. Severely depressed with his academic career slipping away and threatened with expulsion from PSC, he needed to find other routes to keep close to his passion for balls. Connecting with several men in downtown Pensacola bathhouses and theaters, Balla found the inspiration for his doctoral thesis, Efficacy of Athletic Cups: Examining swelling, odor and bacterial growth in the scrotum. Receiving venture capital funding from Peter Thiel, Dr. Balla founded the Institute for Ball Science in 2013. He has worked to further the study of balls across the spectrum and his efforts have brought a wider understanding of the field. One of the institute's earliest successful outreach programs was Ball Inspection Day, partnering with hundreds of athletic directors and gym teachers across the United States and Canada. Millions of students have had their balls inspected by school staff members, becoming a significant and well known part of youth sports culture. Resulting from these programs, a large number of unfit balls have been discovered and removed from service. Newsmax and Fox report that the number of young men who had balls removed at school has increased exponentially over the last decade. Without a doubt these reports are a reference to the work of Dr. Balla and the committed staff at the Institute. |
